Mark Sanford

a sketch from yesterday and today. I may have made him a little too emaciated. . .

I think I'll come back to him soon though.

Guess Who

don't know?

well, I doubted that you would. This is a quick caricature of one of my old professors at Clemson. I'm actually pretty happy with the likeness so that's good. . .

Anyone care to guess?

what, a new post?

Just a couple of doodles to keep the blog from stagnating. . .

I started Bobby Chiu's Digital Painting class today! I'm really looking forward to getting into the meat of this course.

some sketches

These posts are getting farther and farther apart. . .
but, I have been doing new stuff. I promise.

I've got a couple of environment pieces in progress right now but I've been sketching more to brush up on perspective drawing of vehicles. I used to love to do this as a kid but abandoned it as I grew older. I've been inspired by Scott Robertson's Gnomon videos and Sparth's book "Structura" as well as a fantastic book that Angel bought for me called "Mechanika" by Doug Chiang (what a fantastic book). Trying to get better at this and here are a few sketches.

The last one is just some near future special ops soldier that went farther than I thought it would.

Harbor

Another environmental concept. I was thinking of a futuristic resort destination with this one. Putting things like the aircraft in the image is kind of new to me and I spent a LOT of time reworking them. Sad, but I dont' think that it shows .

All Photoshop with a 4x5 Wacom tablet.

River

Another attempt at environment. I've been studying a lot of great artists and trying to soak it all in. This is an exercise in light and shade and distance perspective. I hope that its an improvment over previous attempts.

Apparently I really like a cool greenish blue palette. . .

All Photoshop with a lot of custom brushes and a Wacom tablet. This took around 5 hrs or so.

Tiny Islands

Here is another environmental concept. I'm having a lot of fun with these and really feeling like they're looking mostly like I want them to. This one took around 5-6 hours. All Photoshop with various custom brushes.

Landscape sketch

Here is one that I thought might be good enough to post. . . A nice warm shelter during a very cold winter's night.
I would be committing a crime if I didn't say that I've been obsessing over Jess van Dijk's amazing art lately. Once again I'm smitten. It could be said that I used his stuff as a loose guide for this one. OK, it has to be said. . .

Very overdue post

So, I don't have any excuse for not posting in a while except to say that I've been in a slump. I finished these two commissions and couldn't seem to be able to do anything worth posting. . .

Here they are! They are the first two pieces that I've been paid for and I was very excited about that.
The first one is of a friend's kids and the second one is a caricature of one of my oldest and best friend's wife. I think that both were well received.

Lately I've been trying more landscape stuff after finding some new inspiration. Here's the first of a kind of new approach for me. I hope to post a whole bunch more soon.

Buck Rogers!!

Wow, haven't posted in a while! Not to make excuses but I've been working on some commissions that have kept me from personal stuff. But, I found time to squeeze one in. I've kind of been in a retro sci-fi mood lately.

So, here's a Buck Rogers that I think is finished.
